Symphony No 1 by Daniel Basford

Date Uploaded: August 14, 2015

Symphony No 1 by Daniel Basford

Two Romantic Symphonies for Wind by British Composers

Daniel Basford was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire in 1983. He learnt piano, cello, bassoon and percussion before turning to composition at fifteen. He studied with Kate Romano in 2000 and entered the Royal Northern College of Music in 2001, studying with David Horne. In 2005 he also attended the Britten-Pears Young Artists Contemporary Composition course, studying with Magnus Lindberg and Colin Matthews. Daniel is a freelance percussionist and teacher for Hertfordshire Music Services, and his Symphony “Prometheus” and a choral work “Night Journey” were both premiered by the Hertforshire Youth Wind Orchestra. Most of his wind music is published by Maecenas including Partita Fantastica which I commissioned in my series in memory of our son William, an excellent piece of about Grade 4 standard.

Symphony No 1 by David Lewiston Sharpe.

David Lewiston Sharpe was born in 1976, and studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Kings College and the Royal Academy. His output? is considerable and includes four symphonies, a piano concerto, violin concerto, vocal and chamber music and several volumes of poetry. Stylistically his music is unashamedly romantic, its broad sweeping melodies well suited to the wind orchestra, and his Symphony no 1 for Wind Orchestra is a 25 minutes work of significance, and he handles the idiom with assurance. The first performance was given on 13th November 1999 by the University of Nottingham Wind Orchestra, conducted by Kieran O’Riordan. Browsing on the title will give you a performance of the first movement.
