Holiday Sing-A-Long at Wolf Trap
The Marine Band will perform Wolf Trap's Annual Holiday Sing-A-Long at 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Va. Conducted by Assistant Director Maj. Michelle A. Rakers, the Marine Band-with Marine Band vocalists Master Sgt. Kevin Bennear and Gunnery Sgt. Sara Sheffield-will perform a variety of holiday tunes and then lead the audience in traditional Christmas carols and Hanukkah songs such as "Joy to the World," "Feliz Navidad," "Jingle Bells," "Silent Night," and The Dreidel Song. Gates to the Filene Center will open at 3 p.m., and free parking is available. The Metro shuttle bus will not run for this event. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early. The event is free and tickets are not required.
National Chanukah Menorah Lighting Ceremony
"The President's Own" will perform at the Lighting of the National Chanukah Menorah at 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 6, on the Ellipse across from the White House in Washington, D.C. Conducted by 1st Lt. Ryan J. Nowlin, this annual event will include traditional Chanukah music, hot latkes and donuts, menorah kits and dreidels, and fun for the whole family. The event is free, but tickets are required and can be obtained at www.nationalmenorah.org. The gates open at 3:15 p.m.
The Marine Band recently released its 1996 educational recording, "Music of Richard Strauss," on YouTube. Marine Band on Performance Today
Performance Today features the Marine Band on its Nov. 27 and Dec. 3 shows. On the Friday, Nov. 27, episode: "Music For Cleaning," hear "U.S. Marines operating the vacuum cleaners" in Malcolm Arnold's A Grand Grand Overture: For Three Vacuum Cleaners, One Floor Polisher, and Concert Band, Op. 57 (Marine Band in Hour 2; Program notes at 48:00, Music at 49:06).
On Hour 1 of the Thursday, Dec. 3 show, Performance Today features the band's June 23, 2012, performance of Michael Gandolfi'sFlourishes and Meditations on a Renaissance Theme.
