About Us
BASBWE exists to champion the growth, creativity, and recognition of all wind music across the UK. Our mission is to raise awareness, quality, and accessibility of this vibrant musical form while inspiring participation and education at every level.
Over more than 40 years, we have united and supported musicians, conductors, educators, composers, and ensembles, fostering the development of wind music in schools, universities, and across the wider musical community.
A key part of our work is to encourage the creation and performance of new repertoire – ensuring that innovation, artistic excellence, and creative collaboration remain at the heart of the movement. Without new music, the art form cannot evolve; with it, we ensure a dynamic future.
We also strengthen the sector through our regular publication, Winds magazine which is recognised internationally as a leading voice in wind music.

History
In 1981, the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester hosted an international wind conference under the artistic direction of Timothy Reynish MBE. Since that time, the organisation has commissioned hundreds of new works for many combinations of wind ensembles, held annual conferences throughout the UK and supported member-led projects and events.
Today, BASBWE brings together musicians of all ages and backgrounds from across the UK. Through performance opportunities, collaborative projects, and new music commissions, its aim remains clear: to nurture a vibrant, innovative, and inclusive wind ensemble community. From the earliest experiences in school rehearsals to professional performances on major stages, BASBWE works to ensure that wind ensembles remain a flourishing and accessible part of musical life.
